Silver dollars, minted from 90 percent silver and released into circulation, were last made in 1935. These were "Peace" dollars, depicting the head of Liberty on the front and an eagle on the back. After a long hiatus from their manufacture, Congress authorized the minting of silver dollars in 1964. Some of the most renowned coins ever issued by the U.S. mint were produced between 1965 and 1970, and they contain 40% silver. These coins, bearing the profile of President John F. Kennedy, are extremely collectible and sought-after both by collectors and investors. Silver’s Changing Historical Role In U.S. Currency The silver content was completely eliminated in 1971 when half dollars and dollars met the same fate the dimes and quarters had in 1965. A collectible silver coin was made from 1971 to 1976 however. Eisenhower Dollars containing a net composition of 40% silver were made especially for collectors. While Kennedy 50c pieces have been issued for well over forty years, 90% silver Kennedy Half Dollars were only minted in 1964. Subsequent years were minted from 40% of the white metal, until a clad composition was substituted in 1971. One of the more unusual Silver coins was the Jefferson Nickel of 1942 to 1945. Jefferson Nickels were first minted in 1938 and made of 75% Copper and 25% Nickel. However, in 1942, with World War II raging in Europe and the Pacific, Nickel became a critical war material. The silver content was completely eliminated in 1971 when half dollars and dollars met the same fate the dimes and quarters had in 1965. A collectible silver coin was made from 1971 to 1976 however. The 2020 Silver Eagle will be the last of its kind, with significant changes coming to the coin that originally debuted in 1986 and will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2021.
